Our degree show is a statement about resilience and hard work in turbulent times. Under Current Circumstances marks the end of a degree process, but also celebrates the unknown – the long-awaited and the yet to come.
Our practices range from large-scale painted canvas, to drawing, to performance, to print, to installation, to expanded sculpture. The flow and variety of spaces at Ocean Studios accommodates the mix of practices amongst our cohort allowing everyone’s work to truly flourish. As a group show, Under Current Circumstances embraces our individualities and connects our shared concerns. And as curators, we really wanted to utilise Ocean Studios and its unique features. Having our final show at Royal William Yard makes the whole experience come full circle, as this is where our degrees started.
Under Current Circumstances explores themes we’ve encountered during our degrees. We work with and respond to the materiality of practice. We are concerned with questions around the embodiment of lived experience. We take a phenomenological approach to being in the world and making sense of it through art. We take an interdisciplinary and mixed-media stance to not-knowing. We consider change and decay, instability and safety, politics and legibility, scale and the landscapes of bodies and places.
