Graduate Spotlight 04: Imogen Kemp, Architecture Graduate

After the great feedback and success of publishing our IGNITE website and social media platforms, we decided to shine a spotlight on one graduate, who has uploaded their portfolio to the IGNITE website, each week. Through our Weekly Graduate Spotlight, the graduate chosen will have their work and their experience of The University of Plymouth or Plymouth College of Art promoted and celebrated on our various IGNITE platforms.

Imogen’s Experience of Studying at The University of Plymouth

While the Architecture undergraduate degree has some stressful moments, as every degree does, for Imogen, working in a studio has counterbalanced some of the course stress. Being able to discuss ideas with tutors in an informal environment, while also having the opportunity to collaborate and build relationships with fellow students, has created a supportive environment for the students to break away from any stress they may be feeling, while also being highly productive.

However, Imogen’s experience of Architecture studies has not been limited to the university walls. During the three-year undergraduate degree, there have been an abundance of opportunities to travel Europe, allowing Imogen and her fellow students to study Architecture in a whole new way. By being able to travel to new and foreign cities throughout Europe as part of the degree, Imogen has been able to experience a vast range of architectural designs which span across hundreds of years and dozens of cities.

“Plymouth has allowed us to travel Europe seeing different architecture elsewhere and see our designs come to life during live and competition projects. These opportunities have created an experience that has allowed my creativity to develop freely and place me in good stead for future employment opportunities.” – Imogen Kemp, Architecture Graduate

Post-Graduation Plans

After completing Part One of her Architecture degree, Imogen is seeking to gain experience within the next two years in order to gain an even more enhanced understanding of architecture before returning to study Part Two of her degree. Although Imogen hasn’t yet decided if Plymouth is where she will remain in the future, she is currently looking at UK based locations for work experience. However, following on from the experiences that she gained during her undergraduate degree, Imogen is interested in spending more time in abroad firms to widen her architectural education further.

Overcoming Challenges

“Whilst there were challenges with completing work from home, the support that our year received from the tutoring team 7 days a week was outstanding and a large contributor to the success that I have seen.” – Imogen Kemp, Architecture Graduate.

Due to the lockdown restrictions placed on the UK in March, Imogen was faced with the challenge of relocating and finishing her architecture degree from home. Despite the heap of challenges faced by Imogen and her fellow architecture students, the outstanding level of support offered from the Architecture tutors were key in guaranteeing the students still achieved the completion of their degree successfully.

“During the current climate, it is more important than ever to have a strong online portfolio of work. IGNITE and its professional connections provide another platform for our work to be seen by possible future employers.” – Imogen Kemp, Architecture Graduate
