Biography
I am a jewellery designer, creator and multimedia artist who is passionate about using my skills to promote gender equality. I also experiment with hot glass, both blowing and casting abstract pieces as a means of challenging viewers to question power structures and gender roles. Inspired by the body I create conceptual abject pieces, removing specific areas of the body and displacing them. I highlight values and opinions we hold about our form, our societal norms, our perceptions of self, and at what point the body becomes an object. I recognise how society considers something as worthy, and I use this as a way to show value for unexpected items: for example using highly valued gold colours to represent the usually concealed nipple.
Understanding the meaning and how the viewer will interpret the piece is important to me. I enjoy analysing the background of an object or material. The iconography used in my pieces reference supporting theory and the message I am trying to convey: showing prostitutes in a stained glass window illustrates the juxtaposition of the ‘Madonna-Whore’ complex.
My practice is process led, balancing both technique and theory, which informs the outcome and can help to determine the concept of my projects. I enjoy working in various different mediums and I believe crossing the boundaries between contemporary and traditional craft can open artists to a realm of possibilities. I have incorporated the use of modern 3D printed forms alongside conventional carved or cast versions. By combining new technology and established mediums I aim to create work that pushes the boundaries of ‘craft’.
