Magazine Redesign (Educational Purposes)
As part of an MA module, I conducted a case study on Harper’s Bazaar. Through this case study, I was tasked with producing a cover and double page spread that was inline with the Harper’s Bazaar brand and that utilised stylistic and design elements used by Harper’s Bazaar. In addition, as part of the re-design, I was tasked with sourcing an article from a different genre of magazine and editing it to fit the Harper's Bazaar brand. For my text source, I used an article from NME.com, a music journalism website and former magazine. I then edited the text to suit the Harper's Bazaar readership and sourced, and edited, relevant images that were suitable for the Harper's Bazaar brand.
This provided the opportunity to understand and recognise the importance of design elements such as grid structure, margins and typography in conveying a brand across to a target market, as well as in guiding the reader through the publication. In addition, this project developed further Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop skills, as well as copyediting skills.
Editor of Mayflower: Learning the Land
This edition is the third book in the Mayflower Anthology series, in collaboration with the Plymouth City Council for the Mayflower 400 commemoration.
As Editor, I supported the Managing Editor, edited the body copy and helped to select successful submissions to be featured in this edition. This project provided the opportunity to develop further editorial, copyediting and proofreading skills.
Editor-in-Chief of INK 2020: Elements (Printed Journal)
Published annually, INK is the University of Plymouth's literary anthology that is entirely managed and edited by students of the university.
As the General Editor, I was the creative lead on the publication and was responsible for making final decisions about the anthology and its production. The role involved leading a team of eleven, creating the publication's design and choosing the work that was to be featured in both the printed journal and the online platform. As the creative lead, this project provided me the opportunity to develop Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign skills, as well as leadership, organisation and further design skills. Furthermore, this project helped to further create an understanding of the publishing process - from proposal to production.
Creator and Editor-in-Chief of INK 2020: Elements (Website)
As the Editor-in-Chief, I created and designed a website to accompany INK's printed journal.
This online platform provided additional space for further submissions of a publishable standard to be featured under the INK name. Through creating the website, I was able to develop web design, web editing and further design skills. The website can be found at: https://inkmedia2020.wixsite.com/ink2020
This publication is produced in collaboration with the Britannia Royal Naval College.
As Editorial Assistant, I reproduced tables from the original 1940s archives to fit a new layout in the publication.
During the marketing collaboration, I worked with the University of Plymouth Press and Britannia Museum Trust Press to create an Advance Information Sheet and a catalogue of potential recipients. This collaboration entailed the use of significant market research and design skills to create a publishable Advance Information Sheet and a thorough list of possible recipients. Working on this publication provided the opportunity to develop further Adobe InDesign skills as well as research, marketing, editorial, communication and time management skills.
