Plymouth College of Art
Hi, I'm Shri Gunasekara, a Devon Based illustrator. I specialise in sequential image-making. My work explores family dynamics and intimacy. I visually show these emotive narratives by using bold shapes and compositions, as well as textures and colour jitter to give my digital work an organic feel. These ideas are explored through experimental formats, testing the boundaries of picture books, graphic novels and comics. My projects are an accumulation of fun and intimate family connections through a vivid and exuberant palette of text and visual storytelling.
Organiser of an Illustration Faire - May 2022 I organised a fair in the Student Union at Plymouth College of Art. I was responsible for collecting illustrators interested in selling their work, and communicating with the premises hosting the fair and was a member of the health and safety management of the event. I practised communication skills, organisation, reliability and creative skills. Talk at Bristol Artist Book Event (BABE) - April 2022 I was invited to deliver a 15-minute talk at the Bristol Artist Book Event. BABE is a massive event where small presses and independent artists, from all over the world, come to sell their work, talk and run workshops. I was also selling some of my self-published comics and books at the Plymouth College of Art stall. During the talk, I discussed one of my past projects about exploring my practice. This event helped develop my public speaking skills, organisation, networking, and communication skills. Illustration - April 2022 I was commissioned to make a series of fashion illustrations to complement the original garments. I was asked to convey the ideology of the project through the illustrations, which had the theme of green, renewable fashion, and promoting awareness about mental health. I practised my skills in creative problem solving, understanding briefs, and communication skills. Illustration - March 2022 I was commissioned to produce a set of twelve twilight characters, part of a sticker book. In this project, I worked with a brief which required characters suitable to be printed on a small scale. I was able to practise resourcefulness, working with specks and editing for style and context. Mirror Gallery competition - February 2022 I won first place in a competition. One of the competition awards is that my work will be exhibited in the Mirror Gallery in June 2022. Illustrator Plymouth College of Art - March 2021 I was commissioned by the Student Union at Plymouth College of Art to create a certificate for Student Representative of the Month. In this brief I developed my communication skills, allowing for more effective feedback on my work, and making the final piece fit the client's expectations and needs. I also practised my time management skill in meeting thumbnails, sketch phases and final piece deadlines. Illustrator Plymouth Arts Cinema commission - August 2020 In this commission, I was asked to create promotional materials for the Plymouth Arts cinema reopening. In this commission, I was asked to create a piece to support their brand, while keeping in mind the multi-format it could take. In this brief, I practised my creative problem solving, communication skills and adaptability. I also leaner how to present roughs and sketches to clients to allow for effective communication yet also for essay editions for changings.
